United Introduces New Bag-Drop ‘Shortcut’

After what it called a successful pilot run, United Airlines has launched a new ‘shortcut’ for bag drops at its seven U.S. hubs, effective immediately, the carrier announced Thursday. United claimed that the new process takes “a minute or less on average.”

To use the new service, customers can check in on the United app and select the number of bags they plan to check. At a designated bag ‘shortcut’ location at the airport, travelers can place the bag on a scale and scan the boarding pass at a kiosk. A United staff member will check the traveler’s ID, apply the bag tag and complete the process.

Customers who check in via the United app can skip the kiosks and counters where other customers are checking in or paying for checked bags.

The service was tested at Newark Liberty International Airport in August 2021 and was “instantly popular” with customers and reduced wait times, according to United. The bag-drop shortcut currently is available in Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Newark, San Francisco and Washington, D.C., with plans to expand to “dozens more” airports this year.
