‘A Tale of Two Crowns’ could be the tagline for Nielsen’s recent SVOD ratings with Amazon’s Coming 2 America taking the number one slot for the second consecutive week while Netflix’s The Crown emerged in the originals category.

That’s according to the audience measurement systems operated by Nielsen Media Research, which were released Thursday for the week of March 8-14.

Notable about this week’s rankings is Amazon’s hold on the top slot for two weeks straight in the movie category despite never being in the top 10 until the recent Eddie Murphy sequel premiered. That’s as the Netflix original The Crown came out of nowhere with 449 million viewing minutes to land second only to the streamer’s Ginny & Georgia at 722 million viewing minutes.

“Eddie Murphy’s back with Coming 2 America back to back wins overall for Amazon giving its only two wins since we’ve been tracking – so congratulations to the Coming 2 America crowd,” said Brian Fuhrer, Nielsen’s senior vice president of product strategy in his weekly video announcement, noting the success of Zamunda’s newly-crowned king.

Switching over to the originals category Fuhrer described The Crown’s ascent our of nowhere to the number two slot as the “story of the week.”

“If you remember this followed closely on the heels of the Oprah interview with Meghan and Harry – so there’s a lot of interest with the royals – especially intriguing that the most viewing was to season one, so potentially there are new viewers once again being drawn in to The Crown story …”. Still Fuhrer noted The Crown’s most viewed episode ever was the fourth episode from season four, which had to do with Princess Diana and her relationship with the queen and other royals.

It remains to be seen with news of the recent death of Prince Philip if the series will now continue to top the rankings.

In terms of other movies in the top 10, Fuhrer said, Netflix’s “Yes Day was at 402 billion viewing minutes in its opening weekend just surpassing Raya and the Last Dragon, which is still in premium mode on Disney+.”

Fuhrer e also noted the fact that overall minutes are down across the streaming world overall citing the return of March Madness and its pent up demand after its absence last year and the fragmentations of the “streamosphere” in general.

“The introduction of Paramount+ and Discovery+ – people are sampling these new offerings and we think that’s also having an impact,” he said.

The Nielsen SVOD rankings include Netflix, Amazon, Disney+ and Hulu.
