Former Trump campaign manager and White House aide Kellyanne Conway has joined the campaign of Bernie Moreno, who’s running for the U.S. Senate from Ohio, her first foray into politics since she stepped down from the Trump administration last year amid family drama.

Conway will serve as a senior campaign advisor to Moreno, who is competing in a crowded Republican primary field for the seat left empty by retiring GOP Sen. Rob Portman, who announced early this year he will not run again over the Senate’s “partisan gridlock.”
The former Trump aide’s support could be a boon for Moreno in the highly competitive primary, in which the four Republican candidates have tried to appeal to conservative voters by aligning themselves with former President Donald Trump and are vying for his endorsement.
Conway herself described Moreno as “a conservative, a political outsider, and a successful businessman just like President Donald J. Trump” in a statement Thursday.
Moreno made headlines this week after NBC News obtained emails from 2016 in which he described Trump as a “lunatic” and a “maniac” and claimed he would never support a Trump-led GOP; he’s campaigned as a Trump ally this year.

Conway was a trusted Trump aide and one of his longest-serving White House staffers. She joined his campaign in August 2016, just three months before Election Day, and has been credited with being a key factor in his win. “There would be no President Trump without Kellyanne,” Fox News contributor Katie Pavlich said upon her White House retirement.
