Alaska Airlines has created an investment arm to focus on technology that will help lower its carbon emissions, the carrier announced.

The newly formed limited liability company Alaska Star Ventures is first investing $15 million as part of Los Angeles-based Up.Partners’ $230 million early-stage venture capital fund focused on transportation technology. Up.Partners already has invested in several companies, including electric vertical aircraft developer Beta Technologies.

Alaska in April signed onto Amazon’s Climate Pledge, a promise to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.
