Air Canada has purchased 9.5 million liters—about 2.5 million gallons—of sustainable aviation fuel from producer Neste for flights that depart from San Francisco International Airport, the carrier announced Friday.

The carrier has been purchasing SAF from Neste since February 2022, and this purchase represents a five-fold increase year over year in the airline’s SAF procurement, Air Canada CEO Michael Rousseau said in a statement. Air Canada wants SAF to comprise 1 percent of its fuel by 2025 and to have net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Through Air Canada’s Leave Less Travel Program, corporate customers can purchase SAF, carbon offsets or a combination of both to offset or reduce greenhouse gas emissions related to business travel, according to the carrier.
