White House Denies Accusations Of Unfair Treatment From Fox News

Topline

As Fox News shifts from favored status under the Trump administration to arms-length agitator under President Joe Biden, the right-leaning outlet is beginning to complain of unfair treatment by the White House, mostly recently with Fox reporter Peter Doocy alleging he’s been sidelined during Q&A’s.

Key Facts

Doocy alleged his network is routinely left off lists of reporters given to Biden during Q&A sessions after photos emerged of him at the press conference on Thursday holding a numbered list of reporters appearing to indicate who to call on.

Doocy also claimed the other 4 national network tv news stations – NBC, CBS, ABC and PBS, all of which Biden called on during the press conference – are usually on the lists despite Fox being left off.

Psaki shot back, “we’re here having a conversation aren’t we,” pointing out that Doocy frequently participates in press briefings with her and gets his questions answered by Biden.

Doocy conceded Biden has been “very generous with his time with Fox,” but added that the president has answered Fox questions “only when I have shouted after he goes through his whole list,” pressing for answers about the lists.

Psaki, wrapping up the exchange, said she was “looking forward to doing Fox News Sunday for the third time in the last few months.”

Key Background

Presidential administrations have often clashed with news outlets on the other side of the ideological spectrum. Obama White House communications director Anita Dunn, now a senior adviser to Biden, made headlines in 2009 when she said the administration would treat Fox News “the way we would treat an opponent.” But former President Donald Trump took his opposition to even mainstream outlets, restricting access to outlets like PBS and the New York Times and revoking CNN correspondent Jim Acosta’s press credentials after Acosta refused to give up his microphone during a heated exchange with Trump.

Chief Critic

“Absolute hogwash! He has never been on the list, he has only gotten questions when he’s shouted them at the president,” Fox News anchor John Roberts, formerly a White House correspondent during the Trump administration, said of the exchange between Psaki and Doocey. “The president has said on occasion, ‘You know what, you always ask me the tough questions, but I like you, so go ahead, bring it on.’ He has not been on that list.”
