United Airlines has placed an order for 100 Boeing 787 Dreamliners, the companies announced Tuesday, and will take delivery of the new widebody planes between 2024 and 2032. United also exercised an option to purchase 44 Boeing 737 Max aircraft for delivery between 2024 and 2026 and ordered 56 additional Max planes for delivery in 2027 and 2028.

The new 787s will replace older Boeing 767 and 777 planes. The move is a notable vote of confidence in the Dreamliner, for which Boeing recently had paused delivery for more than a year due to production flaws and inspection concerns. Boeing in August received federal approval to resume deliveries.

United in a statement called the Dreamliner deal “the largest widebody order by a U.S. carrier in commercial aviation history.” All Boeing 767 aircraft will be removed from United’s fleet by 2030, according to the carrier.

“This order solves for our current widebody replacement needs in a more fuel-efficient and cost-efficient way, while also giving our customers a best-in-class experience,” United EVP and CFO Gerry Laderman said in a statement.

Each of the new 787 deliveries will include four classes of service: United’s Polaris business class, Premium Plus, Economy Plus and economy, according to the carrier, which added it planned to add Bluetooth connectivity throughout each new 787.

United also claimed the Dreamliners would “contributes up to a 25 percent improvement in fuel efficiency and lower carbon emissions per seat compared with the airplanes it replaces through new engines, an expanded use of lightweight composite materials, more efficient systems applications and modern aerodynamics.”

The carrier said it would be able to choose among Boeing’s 787-8, -9, and -10 aircraft models, “providing flexibility to support a wide range of routes.”
