United Airlines has invested $5 million in the carbon-capture company Svante, the carrier announced Wednesday. The deal was made through United’s Sustainable Flight Fund, which the airline launched in February.

Svante uses structured absorbent beds known as filters, according to United, that can capture carbon emissions from industrial sites as well as CO2 that already is in the air. Once captured, it is concentrated and can be used to create sustainable aviation fuel and other products.

The investment was made as part of Svante’s Series E funding round and will support the company’s filter manufacturing facility in Vancouver, B.C., according to United.
