U.S. Suspends All Trade With Myanmar Amid Military Takeover

The U.S. will suspend all trade with Myanmar because of the military’s violent overthrow of the democratically elected government, U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai announced  Monday.

President Joe Biden sanctioned Myanmar officials in February and announced the U.S. would withhold $1 billion in government funds.

Tai said U.S. trade engagement would end “under the 2013 Trade and Investment Framework Agreement” which the countries signed to support “mutually supportive” “economic reforms.” 

Myanmar has been under military control since January when Myanmar’s military declared a state of emergency and detained the country’s elected leader.

Myanmar’s security officials have reportedly killed more than 100 people during pro-democracy protests throughout the country.
