Disney+
DIS
announced on March 22 that their new series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier had become the streaming platform’s most-watched series premiere ever during its opening weekend, without revealing any concrete numbers. According to TV Time, a Whip Media company that tracks viewing habits worldwide, in Spain a new Netflix
NFLX
show outperformed the new Marvel series during their release weekend.

Netflix’s Spanish series Sky Rojo, the new fast-paced “Latin pulp” thriller from the creators of Netflix’s hit show La Casa del Papel (Money Heist), was the most watched show in Spain the day after its release, outperforming Disney+’s mega hit The Falcon and the Winter Soldier in that territory.

TV Time’s early performance data for Sky Rojo during its release weekend, from March 19-21, 2021, shows Sky Rojo entered the Top 5 for most-watched SVOD originals across key EMEA (European, Middle Eastern and African) and Latin American markets.

With Argentinian superstar Lali Espósito starring in the series, it is no surprise that Sky Rojo also topped Netflix’s chart as the number one TV Show in Argentina during its launching weekend of March 19-21. Sky Rojo ranked at number 2 in Peru, number 3 in Chile, and number 4 in Mexico. In Europe, the series jumped to number 3 in Italy and Germany, while in France it reached fifth place. In the U.S. and the U.K., however, Sky Rojo never entered the Top 10 TV Shows chart on Netflix during its release weekend, despite receiving some favorable reviews from critics.

In the week ending March 21, Sky Rojo tied with Disney+’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier as TV Time’s best “Show on the Rise” based on global data. The viewing data aggregated by TV Time suggests that both shows saw immediate growth in viewership and became tied number 1 shows on the rise. In third place is another series that was launched on March 19, Apple
AAPL
TV+’s Calls, while Netflix’s documentary series Formula 1: Drive to Survive, which topped the U.K. Netflix charts that weekend, is in fourth place for “Shows on the Rise.” TV Time defines a “binge session” as when four or more episodes of a show are watched and tracked in the app in a given day, and calculates their “Shows on the Rise” chart by determining the week-over-week growth in episodes watched for a given program.

Sky Rojo follows three sex workers, Coral (Verónica Sanchez), Wendy (Lali Espósito) and Gina (Yany Prado), in Tenerife, who after an altercation with their pimp Romeo (Asier Etxeandia) are now on the run from him and his henchmen Moisés (Miguel Ángel Silvestre) and Christian (Enric Auquer). The series’ fast-paced Tarantino-esque filming style and its many cliffhanging punch-like plot twists conduce to binging through the 25-minute-long eight episodes. Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato have created here an entertaining new series with compelling characters, exploring the dire business of the sexual exploitation of women.

Those who have binged the whole eight episodes, and can’t wait to find out what happens to Coral, Wendy and Gina, will be happy to know that the second season of Sky Rojo has already been filmed. Quoted in Sensacine, Álex Pina explains their process of writing the series. The script was written, Pina says, as they were shooting, refining the characters’ stories in post-production according to the performances. Pina confirms that the two seasons were written and shot together with an open ending, which suggests the strong possibility of a third season, depending on how well the series does in terms of viewership.

Netflix has not yet announced the release date for this second season. Judging on how popular the series was in Spain, across Europe and Latin America during its launching weekend, Netflix will hopefully release season two of Sky Rojo as soon as possible.
