Chennai Super Kings notched up their first win of the 2021 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as they first restricted the Punjab Kings to a modest total of 106 runs and chased that down in 15.4 overs with six wickets in the bank. Deepak Chahar was the star for the men in yellow with his best figures in the IPL with the ball taking four wickets of Punjab batting order giving away just 13 runs in his four overs.

Chahar started the game with a bang, hitting the top of Mayank Agarwal’s off-stump on just the fourth ball of his first over. Chris Gayle, hit a couple of shots before both he and skipper KL Rahul were at the receiving end of Ravindra Jadeja’s fielding.

First, his rocket-arm with a direct hit caught Punjab Kings skipper KL Rahul short of the crease then he flew like a bird to his right at his favourite fielding position at backward point to grab a stunning catch to see the back of dangerous Chris Gayle.

If it wasn’t enough, he had a bumper ready for Nicholas Pooran to send him packing without troubling the scorers and PBKS were four down inside the first six overs. Seeing Chahar was on a rampage, Dhoni gave him his fourth continuous over and he removed his namesake Deepak Hooda, to register his best figures in the IPL, 4/13.

After which, Shahrukh Khan did some repair work hitting a few good shots and took Punjab’s score to a three-figure mark, which looked very difficult at a point when they were five down for just 26.

107 wasn’t going to enough and Punjab Kings bowlers tried their best as CSK openers took a little time in getting used to the pace of the Wankhede track. Ruturaj Gaikwad struggled and eventually got out for just 5 off 16 balls to Arshdeep Singh.

After which, Moeen Ali took initiative and played some good shots, while Faf du Plessis also settled down and the duo brought up a 50-run partnership. As the pair looked like getting CSK home with ease, Moeen fell and CSK lost a couple of more wickets as they stuttered across the finish line. But, a Sam Curran boundary took them home eventually with 26 balls to spare.
