Newman was a four-star recruit out of high school. After a redshirt season, he was a reserve for two years.

Newman started 12 games at left guard in 2019 and 10 games at right tackle in 2020.

SCOUTING REPORT

Has played guard and tackle. Strong hands and above average athleticism. Moves well in space and does a good job locating targets.

Mixed results against players with size and power. Can be bull rushed if he doesn’t punch first.

PACKERS’ PREDICAMENT

The Packers entered the draft desperately needing reinforcements up front.

Corey Linsley, the best center in football, went to the Los Angeles Chargers in free agency. Left tackle David Bakhtiari, who tore his ACL before Week 17 last year, might miss the start of the 2021 campaign. Top reserves Ricky Wagner and Lane Taylor have also moved on.

Green Bay drafted center Josh Myers in the second round Friday night and added Newman in the fourth round Saturday. Suddenly, the Packers have far more options up front than they did 48 hours ago.

THEY SAID IT

Packers’ co-Director of Player Personnel Jon-Eric Sullivan: “He’s, No. 1 he’s a smart kid. He’s bright, so that allows him mentally to kind of move and down the line of scrimmage. He’s got really good initial quickness, good lateral movement which allows him to play guard, also allows him to function out there at tackle. To your point, he’s just a versatile piece and you know, we’re really excited to get him. We got a good football player who can do some different things. So, gives us some flexibility.”

Newman said: “I think my versatility is catching a lot of eyes for the next level. Just keep working on the center snaps and getting more familiar with center. I also have a lot of experience at guard and tackle just kind of reverting back to my training on that.”

Josh Edwards, who covers the draft for CBS Sports said: “Newman is a player that I liked coming into the season. He has shown versatility by playing at least three positions along the offensive line. He fires off the snap and is strong at the point of attack. There are times that he oversets in pass protection and his hand placement can improve to maintain better engagement but I think he has a chance to start at the next level. He is probably closer to a role player than a long-term starter, however. I think the fifth or sixth round is probably where he lands as a utility lineman initially.”
