One Of Twenty One Pilots’ Most Impressive Chart Records Has Been Matched

This week, the top 10 on Billboard’s Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart is fairly steady, with very little movement and no new entrants. The most exciting story can be found all the way at the top of the tally, and history has been made as one of the biggest hits in the ranking’s tenure keeps control over the list once again.

24kGoldn and Iann Dior’s “Mood,” one of the biggest singles in the world of 2020 (and now 2021) is steady at No. 1 on this week’s Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart. This is the multi-genre track’s thirtieth frame atop the tally, and it’s not hard to believe that’s one of the most impressive runs of all time.

In fact, with 30 weeks at No. 1, “Mood” is now tied with one other track as the second-longest-running leader in the history of the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart. The rap/pop/rock cut is on the same level as Twenty One Pilots’ massive success “Heathens,” which also managed 30 spins atop the list before working its way back down the ranking.

Last week, “Mood” was tied with Imagine Dragons’ “Believer” as the third-longest-running champion on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart, but with one more turn as high as a title can climb, the hip-hop/rock hybrid has passed that harder-edged composition for good.

Only one single has lived at No. 1 longer than both “Mood” and “Heathens,” and 24kGoldn and Iann Dior will need to hold on for months before they come even close to matching the all-time record. Panic! at the Disco’s “High Hopes” reset the best showing a few years ago, controlling the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart’s throne for an incredible 65 weeks. At this point, “Mood” will need to more than double its performance in order to compete for that bit of the history books.

Unlike “Heathens,” “Believer” and even “High Hopes,” “Mood” quickly worked its way to No. 1 on the Hot 100, while all the others were forced to settle for a peak somewhere inside the top 10. The track also made history by topping the Hot Rap Songs chart, as no single had ever ruled over both genre-specific tallies before. While it is no longer in charge of the rap-specific roster, it is unchallenged on the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart, and it may not be forced to step down for some time to come, as no series competitors appear to be waiting in the wings to take it down.
