Kang Daniel Claims A Solo No. 1 Smash In Korea With ‘Antidote’

Kang Daniel is the king of the Gaon charts this week in his native South Korea, as his debuts atop almost all of the most important rankings with his new projects, which fans clearly couldn’t get enough of.

The singer-songwriter’s new single “Antidote” opens at no. 1 on the Gaon Digital chart, which ranks the most popular, most-consumed songs in South Korea every week using a methodology that combines both sales, streaming and what is called BGM, which stands for background music (usually used in various forms of media).

“Antidote” appears to be Daniels’ first champion on the Gaon Digital chart on his own, though he has come close to reaching the throne before. His previous single “Paranoia” rose all the way to the runner-up space, but it couldn’t quite break through and run the show.

As a member of Wanna One, the boy band that helped launch him to superstardom and which is no longer operating, Daniels reached the summit with two singles, “Energetic” and “Beautiful.” Looking at both his solo output and the music he released as part of Wanna One, the new champion of the Gaon Digital chart has reached the top 10 with at least 15 different releases.

“Antidote” serves as the latest single from Daniels’ new EP Yellow, which also starts its time on the Gaon Albums chart at No. 1, giving him a fourth ruler on that list. The tune is also the bestselling in South Korea this frame. It doesn’t quite rule the Streaming list.

Daniels replaces Lim Young-woong atop the Gaon Digital chart, with the latter singer’s “My Starry Love” finally departing the loftiest space. This time around, that cut falls to No. 3, also pushed down by SHINee’s new hit “Atlantis,” which opens at No. 2.
