JAL to Conduct Trio of Health Passport Trials

Japan Airlines is testing three different health passport platforms over the next several weeks, the carrier announced.

On Friday, JAL tested the CommonPass platform on a flight from Tokyo Haneda to Honolulu, specifically to test the function of sending results from Toho University’s Covid-19 testing clinic at the airport to the app. It will conduct a second test of the platform on a flight from Tokyo’s Narita airport to Singapore on Monday.

JAL’s test follows All Nippon Airways’ test of CommonPass on a flight from Haneda to New York earlier this week.

Later this month, JAL will implement VeriFly on its flights to North America, according to the carrier. VeriFly, which JAL partner American Airlines since last year has been using on select routes, lets users register Covid-19 test results and other necessary documentation to receive a ready-to-fly status, which speeds up the check-in process.

In May, JAL will test the International Air Transport Association’s Travel Pass app on select international flights. With the app, travelers can verify their identity with passport data, receive their Covid-19 test results from approved medical institutions and confirm they meet entry requirements specific to their destination though the app’s global registry of health requirements.

JAL noted that it was working with different platforms as both CommonPass and Travel Pass “aim to become the industry standard for full implementation on a global scale” while VeriFly already “is in practical use in the U.S.”
