India vs England: Big milestone for Sam Curran, Virat Kohli’s feat as skipper

The Virat Kohli-led side won all the series’ in this England’s tour of India. India clinched the ODI series 2-1 at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium in Pune by just seven runs. He had also won the four-match Test series 3-1 and then went onto win the five-match T20I series 3-2.

In the 3rd and final ODI, the visiting side won the toss and had decided to field first. India posted a total of 329 runs in the first innings with the help of fifties from Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya. In response, England fought well but lost the nail-biter. They managed to score 322/9 in 50 overs thanks to Sam Curran’s unbeaten 95. 

Shardul Thakur and Bhuvneshwar Kumar were the most successful bowlers for India picking up 4 and 3 wickets respectively. Curran was adjudged as the player of the match for his wonderful knock.

Stats and numbers after the 3rd ODI series between India and England:

* This was the sixth consecutive ODI series win for India against England at home. Since 1985, the Men in Blue have remained unbeaten against the English side in the home ODI series.

* Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma added 103 runs for the first wicket. This was the 17th time the duo stitched a century partnership in ODIs. They surpassed Matthew Hayden and Adam Gilchrist (16) to attain the second spot among opening pairs. India’s Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar are ahead of the Rohit-Dhawan in this regard as they have 21 hundred partnerships between them.

* Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan completed 5000 ODI runs for the opening partnership. The two are the second opening pair after Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar (6609) to reach the milestone.

* India got out in 48.2 overs in the first innings and managed to score 329 runs. This is the least overs India has batted in the first innings of any ODI to score 300+ runs. Only England (302 in 45.2 overs) played fewer overs than India.

* It was the sixth consecutive ODI that India were successful in scoring 300+ runs. This is the first time such a record has been made by the Indian team in their ODI history.

* The 3rd and final ODI clash against England was Virat Kohli’s 200th game as Indian captain. He became the third Indian to achieve the landmark. Only MS Dhoni (332) and Mohammad Azharuddin (221) are ahead in the record tally.

* The win against England was Virat Kohli’s 128th win as an Indian captain. He equalled Stephen Fleming to attain the joint-fifth spot in the list.

* Indian captain Virat Kohli has been dismissed by Moeen Ali for the ninth time in international cricket. He joined Adil Rashid to become a joint top spinner to take Kohli’s wicket most times.

* Sam Curran’s fighting knock of 95 runs off 83 balls is the joint-highest for a number 8 batsman in an ODI game. Before him, Chris Woakes also scored 95 runs in the same position against Sri Lanka in 2016.

* In the three-match ODI series, a total of 70 sixes were hit by both teams. This is the most number of maximums smashed in a 3-match ODI series.

* Rishabh Pant smashed 28 sixes this year across formats so far. He is leading the chart followed by Martin Guptill (22) and Rahmanullah Gurbaz (20).
