Topline

Salvage teams managed to partially free and refloat the Ever Given—the mega-ship that was blocking the Suez Canal—early on Monday, a week after the giant vessel ran aground and blocked one of the world’s most important cargo routes.

Key Facts

Citing the maritime services provider Inchcape, Bloomberg reported, the ship was refloated after diggers removed 27,000 cubic meters of sand from the banks of the canal.

According to the Wall Street Journal, tugboats will continue to work for a few more hours to ensure the giant ship can begin moving up the canal again soon.

It is immediately not clear how soon the canal would be reopened to shipping traffic and how long it will take to clear a massive backlog of vessels waiting to cross the waterway.

This is a developing story.
