When Shashikala was awarded the Padmashri in 2007, the actress had said, “I have been recognized for this award very late, and indeed, I should have got this award long back.”. Her co-star from the film Mahananda, Mohan Agashe too feels that the versatile actress did not get her due. He said, “I was an upcoming actor and she had passed her prime …but she was alert and focused on the set. She has played some fantastic negative roles…I feel she did not get the due that she deserved”.

Not many of her colleagues knew where she was located including Agashe he said, “I met one of her friends from Solapur who asked me if I could find out where Shashikala lived and I still didn’t know where she resided recently”.

Shashikala passed away at her Colaba residence where she lived with her granddaughter. According to some sources, a mass was conducted at a Colaba church on Sunday afternoon. Shashikala had been influenced by Mother Teresa and had served her organisation for nearly long time.


The actress has to her credit some of the most critically acclaimed films like Bimal Roy’s ‘Sujata’ and acted in films like ‘Anupama’, ‘Phool Aur Pathar’, ‘Gumrah’, ‘Waqt’ and ‘Khubsoorat‘.
