CNN anchor Jim Acosta described former President Donald Trump as “a snake in search of a sewer” in an appearance on Anderson Cooper 360 Wednesday evening. Discussing a decision by Facebook’s oversight board to uphold Mr. Trump’s suspension from using the social media platform, Acosta said “I talked to a longtime Trump advisor who said this is actually worse for Trump than losing re-election, similar to having his tongue cut out.”
Facebook suspended Trump for his role in encouraging violence during the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, describing the ban as “indefinite.” The suspension was later sent to the oversight board, which is funded by Facebook but operates largely independently.
“The Board has upheld Facebook’s decision on January 7, 2021, to restrict then-President Donald Trump’s access to posting content on his Facebook page and Instagram account,” the oversight board wrote in its decision. “However, it was not appropriate for Facebook to impose the indeterminate and standardless penalty of indefinite suspension. Facebook’s normal penalties include removing the violating content, imposing a time-bound period of suspension, or permanently disabling the page and account.”
The board directed Facebook to “re-examine the arbitrary penalty it imposed” on Trump and “decide the appropriate penalty.”
