BTS Member Suga Hits A Major Milestone On YouTube With His Solo Single ‘Daechwita’

BTS is one of the biggest musical acts on the planet right now (the argument could be made that they’re actually the most popular and powerful at the moment), and as if that level of success wasn’t enough, several of the members have released beloved albums, mixtapes and singles on their own as well. Today (April 14), one of the seven vocalists in the group hits a very special milestone on YouTube, one which is still extremely rare to approach for most singers.

Suga’s music video for his single “Daechwita” has just reached 10 million likes on YouTube, a momentous occasion. The clip is quickly rising into the highest tiers of visuals among K-pop artists when looking at how many likes they’ve accrued. When looking specifically at music made by soloists from South Korea, it stands out as one of the uploads with the most thumbs-ups on the platform.

The “Daechwita” video now has 219 million views, so 10 million likes is a very high ratio, and it means that those tuning in to watch (and likely rewatch more than a few times) are very invested not just in the track and the treatment, but the musician himself.

Very few South Korean musicians have seen a music video reach 10 million likes on YouTube, which remains a threshold that’s difficult for any name to reach. He joins artists from his home country like Psy and BTS in the accomplishment.

“Daechwita” served as the lead single from Suga’s recent mixtape D-2, which was released in May 2020. The set, which was shared under his other alter ego Agust D (which he uses when releasing solo music), was a massive win for the star, and it helped him make history on charts all around the world when it first arrived.

D-2 barely missed out on becoming the first top 10 by a South Korean solo act on the Billboard 200 in America, as it debuted and peaked at No. 11. In the same week the full-length arrived, “Daechwita” became one of only a handful of tracks by an artist from that part of the world working on their own to reach the Hot 100 in the U.S. The tune spent one turn at No. 76 on the tally before falling off, but that was enough for him to do what few before him ever had.

In addition to his placement on the Hot 100, “Daechwita” was a trendsetter on various other Billboard charts. The track hit No. 1 on both the Rap Digital Song Sales chart and World Digital Song Sales chart, with Suga becoming the first South Korean musician to hit the peak spot on the former tally. D-2 was a bestseller in the U.S., it ruled the World Albums chart and the songs from the set invaded the aforementioned World Digital Song Sales list, giving him control over almost half of the entire ranking at once.
