The Billboard Global 200, Billboard’s weekly ranking of the most-consumed songs in the world, may be relatively new, but in the few months it’s been operating, it’s become clear that the biggest names from South Korea have the power to debut high and dominate like few in the music industry. This week, one of the most beloved stars from that part of the world makes history on the list with her first venture on her own, proving yet again her immense popularity and incredible talent.

Blackpink’s Rosé debuts her single “On The Ground” at No. 1 on the latest Billboard Global 200, wasting no time going right to the top. The immediate win makes Rosé the first solo South Korean musician, male or female, to rule over the worldwide ranking.

The track, which serves as her debut single without her bandmates from Blackpink, was one of the most-hyped singles thus far of 2021, and fans all around the world rushed to buy and stream the title the moment it was available. It appears on charts in a number of major music markets, with Rosé making history in countless ways with her placement, as it remains relatively rare for solo acts from South Korea to make noticeable impacts on rankings in Western nations.

“On The Ground” was released as a single with a B-side titled “Gone,” and the two were packaged together as a collection known simply as R. The latter cut also makes its way to the Billboard Global 200, landing at No. 29, giving Rosé a pair of top 40 hits right out of the gate.

Rosé has appeared on the Billboard Global 200 before, but never on her own. As one-fourth of Blackpink, she’s scored 10 appearances, a sizable sum for any group. The band racked up most of their hits with the tracks featured on the first full-length, The Album, which was released this past October. In addition to a slew of new placements which all came to them last fall, a handful of older tunes from the quartet have also made their way to the list.

Amazingly, Blackpink never reached No. 1 on the Billboard Global 200, but now Rosé has. The band came very close when their single “Lovesick Girls” opened at No. 2 the week their album appeared on charts everywhere. Their collaboration with Sleena Gomez, “Ice Cream,” also broke into the top 10 for a short time, peaking at No. 8.
