Billie Eilish Makes History With Her Second Record Of The Year Grammy Win

Billie Eilish was just named the winner of the Record of the Year category at the Grammys for her single “Everything I Wanted.”

The dark-pop singer-songwriter makes history in more than one way with her second win in the coveted Record of the Year category, as she took home the top prize last year for her breakout smash “Bad Guy.”

Eilish is just the fifth musical act to win Record of the Year twice, and she’s in truly prestigious company. She joins a club that includes Simon & Garfunkel, U2, Roberta Flack and Henry Mancini. When also looking at his solo music, Paul Simon advances to three wins. Looking at the group, she is obviously only the second female musician to do so, after Flack.

Eilish is also the youngest artist to win more than one Record of the Year Grammy, as she is only 19.

The “Everything I Wanted” star is also just the third name to win Record of the Year in back-to-back ceremonies. Both U2 and Robert Flack managed to do so. Honing in on just those three acts, Eilish is obviously the youngest and just the second woman to manage this doubling-down.

Musician Henry Mancini became the first musician to win Record of the Year twice when his tracks “Moon River” and “Days of Wine and Roses” were both named champions. He collected two of these prizes before the Grammys were a decade old.

Simon & Garfunkel became the group (and second musical act) to win Record of the Year for “Mrs. Robinson,” then two years later for “Bridge over Troubled Water.” Not long after their winning streak, Roberta Flack became the first female artist to join this group, and she was the first to collect the honor in back-to-back shows. She took the trophy home for her singles “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” and then “Killing Me Softly with His Song.”

It would be several decades before another name earned a second Record of the Year Grammy, and U2 remained the most recent additions to this club until tonight. The Irish rockers also won in back-to-back years with “Beautiful Day” and then “Walk On,” both of which were featured on their album All That You Can’t Leave Behind.

“Everything I Wanted” appears to be a standalone single released by Eilish to keep her fans happy as she finishes her sophomore album. The track dropped in November 2019 and quickly gave Eilish another top 10 hit on the Hot 100. It didn’t hang on inside the top tier for long, but it does stand out in her discography as not only a critical favorite but one of the better-performing tracks she’s shared.

Joining Eilish in her Record of the Year win is brother Finneas O’Connell, who produced and co-wrote the tune. John Greenham, the mastering engineer, and Rob Kinelski, the engineer/mixer, were both in tow when “Bad Guy” won last year, and they’re back for another major Grammy win this time around.
