All Nippon Airways has procured sustainable aviation fuel from Itochu Corp. and will use the fuel on ANA’s international and domestic flights from Haneda and Narita airports in Tokyo, the company announced Thursday.

The carrier did not specify the amount of SAF it has acquired, but noted it was the first time it had purchased SAF that was blended in Japan under a public-private initiative led by the Civil Aviation Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. Neste provided the fuel to Itochu for blending.

The initiative is part of the Public-Private Council for the Promotion of Sustainable Aviation Fuel, which was launched in 2022 to encourage decarbonization of the aviation industry by accelerating the usage of SAF. ANA has pledged to replace at least 10 percent of its jet fuel with SAF by 2030 and aims for a goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.
